It’s not often that we leave the dock in the Clearwater area and specifically fish for the beautiful sailfish. Unlike the east coast of Florida the West coast is relatively shallow making our fishery excellent for Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack, Kingfish, Cobia, Tarpon and much, much more. However Sailfish, Mahi, Tuna and the other pelagic not so much as they prefer the deep blue waters of the gulf stream.
With all off that being said we catch our fair share of these pelagic mainly in the spring and summer months as the Loop current pushes deep blue water towards our fishing grounds. On a deep sea charter this week we ended up catching one of the biggest sails I’ve ever seen in our area. It’s always great to catch the bonus fish, but to have it be such a beauty was the stuff that keeps us coming back to the deep blue. The uncertainty and surprises are endless in our offshore fishery and is an indication of a very healthy Gulf of Mexico.
