This month we have enjoyed great weather and a great bite both offshore and inshore. As we begin to transition from our winter fishing into our spring fishing techniques, our target species will also change. Right now we are having a lot of fun putting our clients on a huge variety of fish, and that list will get bigger as Florida begins it’s warm up into spring time.
One of the great things about our location in Clearwater Florida is the variety of fish we get to target. Being located in the west central part of the state allows us a chance to enjoy almost every species at some point throughout the year. Right now, for instance our deep sea charters are catching good numbers of mangrove snapper, grouper and hogfish. These fish are in season and are delicious for anyone interested in keeping a few for dinner. On the catch and release side of things, we are seeing some big gag grouper and amberjack.
Our inshore boat is still on some big Trout which are a lot of fun especially with light tackle. The northern area of our fishery sees the most consistent action with these fish and working the grass flats and edges of the islands is producing some great results. As we transition into warmer water, we expect the redfish bite to pick up as large schools will move into our area and begin to bunch up. These fish are typically very aggressive and are a phenomenal fight for any angler. One of the most popular and sought after fish in our area is the snook. These will also start to feed aggressively in the coming months as they move from shallow creeks and estuaries out towards the local bridges and beaches where they will spend their summer feeding on the plentiful baitfish. Lures and live bait both work well with all of these fish and we are prepared for any scenario while on charter.
The deep sea boat has been crushing the hogfish and big grouper, in the coming months we will be looking forward to Kingfish, Tripletail and Blackfin Tuna. Another spring time favorite is cobia and we are expecting a good migration this year as the bait offshore has already started to school up. Once these bait schools get into our waters they tend to hold up here before heading north and into deeper water. This window of opportunity can be extremely productive for quality fish.
Goliath grouper and shark fishing is right around the corner and will continue through summer. The are often considered a bucket list fish with our average size around 200 pounds with some much larger. Specialized equipment is required to target these giants and we have top of the line tackle to increase our anglers chance of landing one.
We are very excited for this season and the variety that this weather transition brings to our area. In addition to our great fishing, the Clearwater Beach area also has tons of fun activities for the whole family!
