Summer time in Clearwater is the right time to target the silver king. These fish are typically between 75-120 pounds and are on their yearly migration north to spawn and find more comfortable water temperatures. May through August is the window of opportunity here and we take full advantage of this. Fishing the passes, bridges and beaches allows us to target these sought after, high flying beauties. We offer 6 and 8 hour charters for them. Depending on conditions, we either stalk schools of them along the beaches from Tampa Bay to Clearwater Beach and Caladesi Island State Park.
Considered the top gamefish in inshore waters, the Tarpon have extremely hard mouths, making it sometimes difficult to keep them hooked after they take to the air. Strictly a catch and release species as they have no food value, and are better let go to live another day. Some of the bigger fish can be over 50 years old, and often migrate the same patterns year after year.
One of the most exciting way to fish for them is to sight cast while they are rolling and daisy chaining along sand bars and other drop offs and structures. We use crabs, pinfish, shad, thread fins and just about any other bait that they are eating during that particular time. It is mid July currently and if you’ve ever wanted to check the Silver King off your bucket list, now is the time!
